How do MFIs ensure they reach the financially excluded? How can microfinance products be tailored to meet the specific needs of different groups amongst the financially excluded? How can new instruments as agent banking and mobile money be put at the service of the poor? How can the microfinance sector keep its identity as a relevant development tool while facing ‘old’ problems (poverty, gender discrimination, client over-indebtedness, etc.) as well as new challenges such as the impact of climate change and the refugee crises? Research has a crucial role in addressing these questions.

Financial Services: Are We Realising their Full Potential?

Luogo: London, UK

Tipo: Forum

Organizzatore: Financial Inclusion Forum

dal 19-gen-17 al 00-gen-00

Digital financial services are now being touted as the answer to financial inclusion. But there are growing concerns that DFS primarily focuses almost exclusively on payments – not least of all because the mobile network operators are leading the charge, and banks typically remain laggards. Having asked the poor to run the marathon out of poverty on one leg (microcredit), are we doing the same again by asking them to run the race with digital payments alone? We know that the poor need a range of financial services (savings, credit, insurance and payments) and thus real financial inclusion must necessarily provide all of these.

Despite the expansion of institutions providing credit and loan services in developing countries, still only 0.5% of global microfinance institutions offer the services and products responding to Islamic financing principles (CGAP survey, 2008). In the context of an evident huge demand for the expansion of these financial products and services, the development of Islamic microfinance is still in its infancy. As this tool has the potential to serve currently unbanked, how can the Islamic microfinance sector reach the scale required?

The Seminar will aim at discussing how the EFSI could better target investment into this field, as well as tackling the many issues that arise when discussing the financing of such an important sector: quality requirements, user involvement, role of public and private financing, etc.

19th MFC annual conference: “Microfinance in the Cloud”.

Luogo: Tirana, Albania

Tipo: Conference

Organizzatore: Microfinance Centre

dal 22-giu-16 al 00-gen-00

The overarching conference theme considers the space that microfinance could occupy if it fully embraces new technology, or the detachment it will suffer if it does not. But is it really a simple binary choice between technology and tradition? Can we find a “third way” to maintain the unique value of microfinance within the digital world? What does a microfinance institution need to go digital, and what are the risks? This conference will be a key platform to debate the tradeoffs, make the case for digital, and critically examine what aspects of traditional service delivery we need to preserve. Importantly, we’ll do all of this by putting the experience of real institutions under the microscope.

Luogo: Warsaw, Poland

Tipo: Conference

Organizzatore: European Microfinance Network

dal 16-giu-16 al 17-giu-16

For more than 10 years, Microfinance has figured on the European agenda and shall remain there as long as we face social and financial exclusion in Europe. The number of challenges that the socially and financially excluded face has not ceased growing, and neither has the need of being responsive to these changes. Therefore, Microfinance Institutions (Who?) are increasingly offering a variety of products & services (What?) all across Europe, with the aim of satisfying the changing needs and wishes of the customers (for Whom?). However, it would seem like the definition of microfinance has not evolved in parallel over this past decade.

Savings groups (SGs) are being increasingly promoted in Africa by development actors who seek to improve basic financial and insurance services among the poor, especially among vulnerable groups excluded from microfinance institutions. Although savings groups are inspired by the traditional and widespread rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs), they differ from them as the regular contributions do not rotate but rather accumulate into a fund for the purpose of lending money for an interest to the group members.

Using data from a global online crowdfunding platform, our results indicate that investors tend to invest with their head (objectively) rather than with their heart (subjectively).

Researchers and practitioners have looked to microfinance programs as one approach to promote economic security and reduce sexual risk behavior of women working in sex work. However, concern exists about the impact of microfinance participation on women’s risk for violence. Some research studies have found that participating in microfinance programs heightens women’s risk for violence, while others have found that microfinance participation protects women from violence. The impact of microfinance participation on women’s experiences of violence appears to vary per the cultural context.

China should tighten its supervision of the micro-finance industry to guard against risks to financial stability, Chinese news outlet Caixin reported China central bank vice governor Chen Yulu saying at a Beijing conference on Thursday. Chen's comments come after the country's banking regulator on Wednesday released detailed rules to curb an unruly peer-to-peer (P2P) lending sector, underlining China's commitment to the clamp down on a sector riddled with runaway managers and pyramid schemes. Microfinance has grown quickly in China, driven by demand from cash-starved small- and medium-sized enterprises who are turned away by traditional lending institutions that lean towards risk-free state-owned enterprises. Small lenders that help the poor buy everything from bicycles to sewing machines are back and growing at breakneck speed after the industry nearly collapsed six years ago. The last boom ended badly after a number of borrowers committed suicide. That prompted authorities in Andhra Pradesh to effectively stop micro lenders collecting debts. The state once accounted for up to 40 percent of industry loans. The Reserve Bank of India has since capped usurious lending rates.

Urban refugees often fall between the cracks of aid organizations, but are ideal candidates for microfinance. But their circumstances need to be carefully vetted, say Evan Easton-Calabria and Naohiko Omata, authors of a global survey on microcredit. Although financial capital is as indispensable as seed funding is to startups, very often refugees do not have access to the loan and saving facilities of formal bank and credit institutions. Many are not inclined to take on refugees as clients since they are perceived as a “high-risk” group that may simply return to their own country without repaying loans. Even if access is not denied, opening a bank account requires a residential address and often a national identity card. Most refugees lack this kind of documentation.

The longterm unemployed: the people that the economic recovery forgot?

The long-term unemployed (LTU) are those who have been out of work and searching for a job for 12 months or longer. The number of long-term unemployed doubled between 2007 and 2014, reaching 12.4 million people or 5% of the active EU population. This equals to around half of the total number of unemployed.  What is particularly worrying is that six out of ten of the LTU have been out of work for more than two years and their share remains at historically high levels.

Interview to Mr Yunus. Quote: "We have to become aware of the fact that we are in the middle of another process, which is the accumulation of all the wealth in the world in very few hands. We are not aware of that, unless somebody tells us something like that 62 people now own [as much wealth as the poorer half] of the world. Last year it was 80 people and 10 years back it was 380 people. What will be next year? If you go on, soon we'll have a situation where one person owns the whole world. "

Green Microfinance: A tool for Sustainable Business an Climate Action

Fonte: Huffington Post

The interest in green microfinance is clearly growing. It is frequently discussed at international conferences like Foromic in Latin America or African Microfinance Week, it is featured in special issues of academic journals like Enterprise Development and Microfinance, and was a topic at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP20, in December 2014. Green microfinance has undeniably become a very trendy field where terminology, definitions, and indicators are in the process of being developed and tested. There are many different views on what it is and what it can accomplish, and there is a risk of overestimating themiracle of microfinance—in this case, of green microfinance—so efforts to assess its performance are necessary, such as one recently conducted by MIX.

The provision of small loans or other financial services to the poor will never work until we address the background conditions that produce poverty in the first place. The list of needed measures to create an enabling environment for poor people to improve their lives is long. There is need, for example, for a fairer distribution of productive assets such as land or putting in place pro-poor labour legislation at the national level, and a rethink of unfair trade policies and aid conditionalities at the international level, which continue to disempower poor people in developing countries around the world.

There is evidence from a numberof studies (using a variety of methodologies acrossdifferent settings) suggesting that microfinance isgood for microbusinesses. This result is observedacross different microfinance services, including mi-crocredit and microsavings instruments. Based onthe studies in this survey, the overall effect on theincomes and poverty rates of microfinance clients isless clear, as are the effects of microfinance on mea-sures of social well-being, such as education, health, and women’s empowerment. Hopefully, the nextwave of research will provide further insights intothese critical questions.

A collection of essays explodes some of the myths of the microfinance industry. Review by Amy Kazmin. This is a book that should be read by anyone with an interest in the sector. Despite the bleak picture they paint, the editors do not write off the idea of microfinance — or, rather, financial services more broadly defined — as a tool to help the poor. But in their conclusion they call for a new “commons-driven” approach, less reliant on market mechanisms, to provide such services.

Drawing on extensive empirical research, this important volume examines the whole chain of microcredit—from investors and donors to clients— in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of its impact. In doing so, the essays collected here shed light on the many causes of the current microcredit crisis, including microcredit organizations that have been unprepared for massive growth and greedy investors and shareholders attracted by profits. The result is a timely and necessary look at what has become one of the most contentious topics within global economic development.
