How do MFIs ensure they reach the financially excluded? How can microfinance products be tailored to meet the specific needs of different groups amongst the financially excluded? How can new instruments as agent banking and mobile money be put at the service of the poor? How can the microfinance sector keep its identity as a relevant development tool while facing ‘old’ problems (poverty, gender discrimination, client over-indebtedness, etc.) as well as new challenges such as the impact of climate change and the refugee crises? Research has a crucial role in addressing these questions.

Financial Services: Are We Realising their Full Potential?

Luogo: London, UK

Tipo: Forum

Organizzatore: Financial Inclusion Forum

dal 19-gen-17 al 00-gen-00

Digital financial services are now being touted as the answer to financial inclusion. But there are growing concerns that DFS primarily focuses almost exclusively on payments – not least of all because the mobile network operators are leading the charge, and banks typically remain laggards. Having asked the poor to run the marathon out of poverty on one leg (microcredit), are we doing the same again by asking them to run the race with digital payments alone? We know that the poor need a range of financial services (savings, credit, insurance and payments) and thus real financial inclusion must necessarily provide all of these.

Despite the expansion of institutions providing credit and loan services in developing countries, still only 0.5% of global microfinance institutions offer the services and products responding to Islamic financing principles (CGAP survey, 2008). In the context of an evident huge demand for the expansion of these financial products and services, the development of Islamic microfinance is still in its infancy. As this tool has the potential to serve currently unbanked, how can the Islamic microfinance sector reach the scale required?

The European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI) can be a useful tool in which to unlock investment into high quality social services and improve career paths for its workforce.  Despite this potential, only 3% of EFSI investment has been dedicated to “social infrastructure”; far below the possible contribution EFSI could make towards such a growing sector. The Seminar will aim at discussing how the EFSI could better target investment into this field, as well as tackling the many issues that arise when discussing the financing of such an important sector: quality requirements, user involvement, role of public and private financing, etc.

19th MFC annual conference: “Microfinance in the Cloud”.

Luogo: Tirana, Albania

Tipo: Conference

Organizzatore: Microfinance Centre

dal 22-giu-16 al 00-gen-00

The overarching conference theme considers the space that microfinance could occupy if it fully embraces new technology, or the detachment it will suffer if it does not. But is it really a simple binary choice between technology and tradition? Can we find a “third way” to maintain the unique value of microfinance within the digital world? What does a microfinance institution need to go digital, and what are the risks? This conference will be a key platform to debate the tradeoffs, make the case for digital, and critically examine what aspects of traditional service delivery we need to preserve. Importantly, we’ll do all of this by putting the experience of real institutions under the microscope.

13th EMN Annual Conference: Who, What and for Whom? Shaping European Microfinance

Luogo: Warsaw, Poland

Tipo: Conference

Organizzatore: European Microfinance Network

dal 16-giu-16 al 17-giu-16

For more than 10 years, Microfinance has figured on the European agenda and shall remain there as long as we face social and financial exclusion in Europe. The number of challenges that the socially and financially excluded face has not ceased growing, and neither has the need of being responsive to these changes. Therefore, Microfinance Institutions (Who?) are increasingly offering a variety of products & services (What?) all across Europe, with the aim of satisfying the changing needs and wishes of the customers (for Whom?). However, it would seem like the definition of microfinance has not evolved in parallel over this past decade.

dal 02-mag-16 al 00-gen-00

Savings groups (SGs) are being increasingly promoted in Africa by development actors who seek to improve basic financial and insurance services among the poor, especially among vulnerable groups excluded from microfinance institutions. Although savings groups are inspired by the traditional and widespread rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs), they differ from them as the regular contributions do not rotate but rather accumulate into a fund for the purpose of lending money for an interest to the group members.

Crowdfunding has become a popular boundary spanning mechanism for small ventures and entrepreneurs across the globe to gain visibility and access to a multitude of investors. In this study, Maria Figueroa-Armijos (American University - Kogod School of Business, US) draws upon signaling theory and social identity theory to investigate whether crowdfunders use objective criteria or subjective criteria, respectively, when investing their money through micro–lending. Using data from a global online crowdfunding platform, our results indicate that investors tend to invest with their head (objectively) rather than with their heart (subjectively).
